Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund Trustee ResignedWritten by William Hushburn on Friday, August 20th, 2010
Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund Trustee Resigned-Jeremy Ractliffe the former head of Nelson Mandela’s charity has resigned from the charity’s board after admitting that he secretly kept the diamonds. The model, Naomi Campbell allegedly gave her the stones in a 1997 party in South Africa.
Earlier this month, Ractliffe admitted that he received the stones from the model and keep them under his supervision. He said he took the diamonds as he thought it might be illegal for Campbell to take them out of the country.
Diamonds are allegedly given by Charles Taylor the former president of Liberia who has been accused of using illegally mined diamonds to secure weapons for the Sierra Leone’s rebels during the 1991-2001 civil war that have caused the death of many civilians.
Ractcliffe turned over the stones to the South African police after Naomi Campbell implicated his name in the court. The model has stated that she had given three diamonds to Ractliffe because she wanted them to donate to go to charity.
The former chief executive decided to step down from his role as a trustee because he doesn’t want to implicate nor tarnish the image and reputation of Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund by not informing his colleagues about the diamonds.
